Social Mind: Social and AI Insights - December 2023

Tips and insights plus news and information on useful tools and resources to help you navigate the worlds of social media and AI.

Welcome!

Last week I was training journalists in the warmth of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia so this week’s Welsh weather is a bit of a shock to my system 🥶

JP in Riyadh

This month there's been a mass exodus of brands from X which is now a very poor choice of social network for brands, businesses and individuals. Apple started the ball rolling and since then over 100 big brands including including Coca Cola, Walmart and Disney have stopped advertising on X and/or quit posting all together.

If you'd like advice on excellent alternatives like Threads, I present a virtual course via NILC or you could book a one-to-one or in-house workshop - just hit reply or get in touch.

If you'd like to chat about anything AI or social media related, just hit reply or get in touch.

Social Mind will be back on 1 January 2024.

Have a wonderful Christmas 🧑‍🎄

Best wishes

Instagram rolls out Reels download feature: How to make the most of it

In a significant update for Instagram enthusiasts and content creators, Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has announced a new feature that's set to enhance the way we interact with Reels. All Instagram users can now download public Reels.

This new functionality allows users to download their favourite Reels directly onto their devices. To do this, simply use the 'Share' option (paper plane icon) on the Reel you wish to save. The downloaded videos will carry an Instagram watermark, ensuring the original creator's account name is visible, maintaining credit where it's due.

However, there's an interesting twist when it comes to audio. If a Reel features original sound, it will be downloaded with the video. But, in cases where the Reel uses a licensed audio clip, the downloaded version will be silent. This distinction is crucial for creators who often rely on popular tracks to enhance their content.

For those concerned about privacy or content control, Instagram has thought about you too. Users who prefer not to have their Reels downloaded by others can easily disable this feature. This can be done through the Privacy menu, under the Reels and Remix settings, giving you complete control over whether your Reels can be downloaded by others.

How can you make the most of this new feature?

This update opens up new avenues for content sharing and curation on Instagram.

1) Reel Reviews - Download and then Share a Reel adding your own commentary or insights. This could be done in a Story, on a follow-up post or as you can now share outside of Instagram, you could embed in a blog post.

2) Collaborative Reel Series - Partner with other creators or clients to create a series of Reels that you can share on each other's profiles.

3) Testimonials or Reviews - If clients are producing Reels with positive feedback on your business, you could now share these across all your channels. If they aren't, then encourage them to do so.

4) User-Generated Content Spotlights - Encourage your followers to create Reels related to your industry or services and share the best ones

5) Boost Reels - To further amplify any of the above ideas you could 'boost' the Reels that you have re-uploaded.

Will you be using this new feature and taking advantage of these ideas?
